After 25 Years India Ruling Party Leaders Face Trial over Demolishing Mosque

The court said today that the trial will held in the northern city of Lucknow and should wrap up in two years.
 
Supreme Court's decision came after The Central Bureau of Investigation has petitioned it for restoring criminal conspiracy charges against leaders of Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the demolition of the 16th century mosque, Babri, on December 6, 1992 by a Hindu mob which sparked one of India’s worst communal riots that left more than 3,000 people dead
 
A lower court had earlier dropped conspiracy charges against senior party leaders including L.K. Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and Uma Bharti.
 
The Babri Masjid demolition case stemmed from two crime files (Crime No: 197/1992 and Crime No: 198/1992) against BJP veteran leader Advani and lakhs of ‘karsevaks’ (volunteers) who were in and around the disputed structure on December 6, 1992 when the Babri mosque was demolished.
 
On December 6 in 1992, a group of karsevaks dismantled the Babri Masjid which the Hindus believed that stood on the site of a temple dedicated to the Hindu god King Rama.
 
The case has been languishing in India's sluggish legal system for almost 25 years.
