Earlier, the International Organization for Migration reported that in 2017, nearly 32,000 refugees and migrants have crossed the Mediterranean to reach EU states and more than 80% of them are heading for Italy.
Since the overthrow and murder of Gaddafi, Libya has become a haven for people smugglers and slave traders on one of the main routes for people from Africa and the Middle East to attempt the journey.
To make matters worse, the once-prosperous country, torn apart by warring rivals, now risks being permanently divided.
Earlier, a deputy assistant to the US President proposed that Libya be partitioned into three new states: Cyrenaica in the east, Tripolitania in the northwest and Fezzan in the southwest. These were the administrative divisions of Libya in the Ottoman Empire.
However, the results of this 'experiment' in Libya may soon backfire and the EU states can expect worse to come.
