The mutineers also called for the release of prisoners and the overthrow of the government.
The broadcast was cut off after the statement was read and the signal has been off air the rest of the day, reports say.
The government troops surrounded the Information Ministry after the incident and the mutineers left the building.
There have been no reports of clashes between renegade soldiers and government forces.
"We do not know who is leading the situation...everybody has been put into the same room (in the ministry)," Amanuel Ghirmai, an Eritrean journalist in Paris for independent Radio Erena, quoted the sources as saying in Asmara.
There was no immediate statement from the government in this regard.
President Isaias Afworki has ruled the country, which had broken off from Ethiopia in the 1990s, since 1993.
