Both groups offer evidence to prove their impression of the ISIL. The first group refers to acknowledgements by Western officials about the involvement of their intelligence and security organs in the armament and finance of ISIL militants fighting in Syria.

ISIL’s 60,000-strong military force and its equipment with modern weaponry are all indicative of the Takfiri group’s dependence on major power sand rich governments.

But the second group believes that the ISIL owes its success in Iraq to its deep belief in Takfirism.

Identifying the root of ISIL is important, but not the prime issue about these Takfiri terrorists. Some media are focusing on the formation of the ISIL in order to divert public attention away from their brutal crimes in Iraq and Syria.

The important issue with ISIL is that this terrorist group is a co-product of Takfirism-Wahhabism and Western liberal capitalism with the objective of annihilating the idea of political Islam. ISIL is where the interests of these two groups meet. Despite all their differences, Wahhabism and Western liberal capitalism are opposed to a political interpretation of Islam and to the presence of Islam as a comprehensive discourse for directing individual and social life of mankind.

Wahhabism and Salafism, which are far from the developments of the new world, stick to fundamentalism. Fundamentalists believe that politics have to be removed from everyday life to bring happiness to humanity.

The Saudi Wahhabism’s enmity with Iran’s Islamic Revolution since its very victory in 1979 stems from this very ideological contrast. Iran’s Islamic Revolution was a concrete manifestation of political Islam which is in stark contrast with Salafism and even Western liberal capitalism.

Meantime, the Western governments deeply believe that no Islamic cult, except for political Islam, seeks the renaissance of the Islamic civilization to counter the Western civilization. That is why Washington and London are allied with the most reactionary regime in the world – Saudi Arabia – while remaining hostile to the most democratic government in the Middle East – Iran.

The Western civilization, spearheaded by the US and Britain, resorts to undermining political Islam as the best strategy for strengthening their hegemony. This strategy is presenting a doctored image of political Islam in the form of a group like ISIL. The idea behind this ruse is to spread the claim that political Islam breeds nothing but violence and extremism. Similarly, the Western governments paint a violent and fundamental image of Iran’s Islamic Revolution in an attempt to distort the history of the Islamic Republic.

But such puppets as ISIL have an expiry date and they will cease to exist as soon as their presence harms the interests of the Western governments. The West was supportive of ISIL when its militants were fighting the Syrian government. The US even supported the ISIL against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. But after the ISIL launched its offensive in Iraq and particularly after it beheaded American journalist James Foley, it has turned into a cause of serious concern for Washington.

Similarly, al-Qaeda was backed by the West when it was fighting the former Soviet Union in Afghanistan under the cover of combatants. But when it threw down the gauntlet at the West it was labeled as the symbol of international terrorism.

These tactics should not dupe anyone, because the West’s strategic vis-à-vis political Islam has not changed yet. Undermining political Islam – which meets humanity’s needs effectively – is the most important strategy by the West in the creation of fundamentalist groups. Islamic thinkers and intellectuals should take this issue into account.

Even if the ISIL is likely to be weakened, one has to expect the emergence of similar extremist groups.
