Egyptians leave in poverty – President Sisi’s decisions bring misery to the masses

28 Jul 2014 08:37

Islam Times - Following a series of decisions aimed to reduce Egypt’s financial crisis, Egyptians have found themselves much worse off than ever before. As a result many Egyptians have said they would not be able to buy their children any new clothes for this Eid.

The number of poor people in Egypt has increased since the revolution, with the trend set to continue said experts. The number of Egyptians living beneath the poverty line increased in 2012-2013 to 26.3%, compared to 25% in 2010-2011, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS).

Experts fear that the inflationary impact of the recent changes in the energy and electricity subsidies, together with the absence of an efficient social safety net, could lead to an increase in the number of those in need.

As Egyptians are waking up to the realities of Sisi’s rule, many feel they have somewhat been cheated and lied to.

Egyptians have complained that this year Eid would not be a time to rejoice but rather to reflect on all things lost.
