Iraq president calls on closer ties with Iran

Islam Times - Iraq new President Fuad Masum has called for closer ties with Iran, stressing that the Islamic Republic had proven a key ally as Iraq is looking to establish itself as a stable and functional democracy.

The remark came as President Masum met with Iran new Ambassador to Iraq, Hassan Danaii.

Iraq’s parliament last Thursday elected veteran Kurdish politician Fuad Masum as federal president, a move that paves the way for the much-delayed formation of a new government.

He succeeds the ailing Jalal Talabani, who returned only five days ago from 18 months of medical treatment in Germany to serve out his tenure.
