Deadlock in Pakistan's peace process over Taliban's prisoners

15 Apr 2014 06:19

Islam Times - Taliban mediation committee member in Pakistan, Professor Ibrahim noted on Friday that a deadlock-like situation has developed between the government and Taliban, adding that the army is clearly unhappy over the planned release of Taliban prisoners.

Talking to private TV channel, Geo News, Professor Ibrahim explained that a refusal on both side to engage had created a deadlock-like situation. He noted he could only pray the talks would proceed in the right direction.

Professor Ibrahim further emphasized that discontent in the army over the planned release of Taliban prisoners, a move which aims to facilitate rapport with Taliban leaders, only added tensions to an already impossible situation. He stressed that he was personally working toward enabling talks between all parties.

It is important to mention that Pakistan’s government has recently released a group of Taliban prisoners as a show of good faith. Taliban leaders subsequently called on officials to release additional Taliban militants.

The dialogue process between Taliban and government has been ongoing for several months now.

Since March an estimated 40 people, on both sides of the fence had been killed in Waziristan.
